Skincare Prep Before Your Wedding Day — What Your Makeup Artist Wants You to Know

Here's something I don't think brides hear enough. The single biggest thing you can do to ensure your wedding makeup looks flawless isn't about the makeup at all. It's about your skin. A well-prepped canvas makes every product perform better, last longer, and photograph more beautifully. So let's talk about what to actually do in the lead-up to your wedding day.

Start Earlier Than You Think

Ideally, you want to begin a consistent skincare routine at least three to six months before your wedding. I know that sounds like a long time, but skin takes time to respond to new products and routines. If you start too close to the wedding and try something new, you risk a reaction at the worst possible moment. Give your skin time to adjust, settle, and glow.

Get the Right Support Around You

When you book your wedding makeup with me, I send every bride a Bridal Guide that includes a list of local skincare professionals I personally recommend. These are the people I trust to help get your skin in the best possible condition in the lead-up to your special day. Having the right facialist, skin therapist, or dermal clinician in your corner well ahead of the wedding makes my job easier and your results even better. It's one of the things I'm most proud to include because great skin truly is a team effort.

Focus on Hydration Above Everything Else

Hydrated skin is everything when it comes to a flawless makeup application. When skin is dehydrated, foundation can cling to dry patches, settle into fine lines, and look patchy by midday. A good hydrating serum used consistently in the months before your wedding will make a noticeable difference. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and ceramides. These are your skin's best friends in the lead-up to the big day.

Don't Try Anything New in the Final Four Weeks

This is one of the most important rules and one I repeat to every bride I work with. The four weeks before your wedding are not the time to try a new facial, a new acid, a new peel, or a new prescription product. Stick to what you know your skin loves. New products can cause purging, sensitivity, or reactions and that's the last thing any of us wants the week before your wedding.

Book Your Facials at the Right Time

Professional facials can be wonderful for bridal skin prep, but timing is everything. A deeper treatment or extraction facial should be done no closer than four to six weeks before your wedding to allow any redness or purging to fully settle. In the final two weeks, a gentle hydrating facial is perfectly fine. Just avoid anything with strong acids, extractions, or lasers close to the day.

Keep it Simple in the Final Week

In the seven days leading up to your wedding, your routine should be simple, gentle, and consistent. Cleanse, hydrate, SPF during the day, and a good moisturiser at night. That's genuinely all you need. Resist the urge to go all in on new products or treatments because you're feeling the pressure. Trust the routine you've built and let your skin do its thing.

On the Morning Itself

On your wedding morning, apply your usual moisturiser and let it fully absorb before I arrive. Avoid heavy oils or balms as these can prevent foundation from adhering properly. If you wear SPF daily, continue to do so. I'll work with it. And please, skip the heavy primer or base products before I get there. Your prep is done. Leave the rest to me.

Great skin on your wedding day isn't about perfection. It's about preparation. A consistent routine, a little patience, and some early planning will set us both up for the most beautiful result. If you're ever unsure what to use or avoid in the lead-up, I'm always happy to chat through it at your trial.
